Position Not Funded

Sawyer County's February 2011 grant proposal to the DNR to continue the AIS Coordinator position was not funded. The positoin will continue with Kristy Maki through July, but after that funding will depend on the DNR.

The DNR will be changing the ranking criteria for the next grant go-around (August 1), and that may change the probability of Sawyer County receiving a grant. One of the big impediments to being awarded enough points to get funded is the ranking criteria that gives extra points to lakes that are "super spreaders" (lakes that have 3 or more invasive species). The ranking criteria appears to give the super spreader lakes a large advantage and the county position can't compete since Sawyer County doesn't spend 50% of this position time on super spreader lakes (which means there are not a lot of lakes with lots of invasives--that's great!).

Maki will be submitting a grant proposal in August to continue the position and the ranking criteria may be revised before then. If you are interested in looking at the ranking criteria, there is an included a link to the DNR website.

If anyone elects to write to the DNR about the grants and/or ranking criteria, or to let them know your position on the value the county AIS Coordinator positions, send your remarks to
